About Femi
Oluwafemi Adepoju Adewumi was born in Ibadan, built a career that took him across the world, and never forgot where he came from.
EARLY LIFE
Rooted in Ibadan
Oluwafemi Adepoju Adewumi was born on 22 September 1973 in Ibadan, Oyo State, the third of four children. His father, Mr. Adepoju Adewumi, was a lecturer at Wesley College Teachers Training Institute in Elekuro, Ibadan. Education was not a privilege in the Adewumi household. It was simply what you did.
Femi attended Oritamefa Baptist Nursery and Primary School before going on to Federal Government College Ido-Ani in Ondo State. For university, he chose the institution that would shape the rest of his life: the University of Ibadan, where he graduated with a Bachelor’s Degree in Petroleum Engineering in 1997.
Career
From Ibadan to the World
In 1997, Femi joined Schlumberger International in Warri as a Drilling Engineer. Over the next nineteen years, his career took him across Africa, Europe, and the Middle East. He earned a reputation not just for technical excellence but for the kind of leadership that people remember long after a project ends
In June 2017, he joined General Electric Oil and Gas as Chief Marketing Officer, later becoming Commercial Operations Leader in March 2019. He was an active member of the Society of Petroleum Engineers, Nigeria. His career was the kind that inspires — built on hard work, discipline, and a refusal to be ordinary.
BEYOND THE CAREER
More Than His Career
Femi’s professional achievements tell one part of his story. The fuller picture belongs to the people who knew him. He was a chorister at Abundant Life Baptist Church in Ile Aperin, Ibadan, and played with the Baseline Band as an undergraduate at UI. Faith, music, and community were not secondary to his life. They were central to it.
Those who knew him describe a man who was selfless, warm, and genuinely fun to be around. He devoted himself to God, to his family, and to everyone in his orbit. He is survived by his siblings Tolu, Fadeke, and Foluso, and mourned by a family and circle of friends too numerous to count.
HIS LEGACY
Why the Foundation Exists
The Femi Adewumi Memorial Foundation was created by the people who loved him, to ensure that his story does not end with his passing. It begins where Femi began, at the University of Ibadan, supporting the next generation of Engineering students the same way education once supported him.
